Wolverine Pipe Line Company

Case Study

Two Decades of Strategic  Partnership

For more than twenty years, MRG has supported Wolverine Pipe Line Company as a trusted public relations, public awareness, and communications partner. Our work has helped support Wolverine’s RP 1162 public awareness compliance efforts, strengthen stakeholder communications, and contribute to audit-ready programs built to withstand rigorous regulatory review. From long-term public awareness initiatives like PIPE and Paradigm liaison presentation coordination to day-to-day stakeholder engagement, communications campaigns, and crisis support, MRG brings deep experience in managing pipeline communications for complex operations.

Public Awareness Program

The company needed a team capable of helping maintain a strong, compliant public awareness program, support stakeholder outreach across multiple states, and reinforce communications practices that would stand up under audit scrutiny.

Strategic Communications

Across its operations, Wolverine required strategic communications support to inform communities, engage key stakeholders, respond to media inquiries, and manage outreach related to pipeline maintenance, construction activity, regulatory requirements, and other sensitive public-facing issues.

Public Awareness Efforts

A core part of this work has been supporting Wolverine’s public awareness efforts in a way that aligns with RP 1162 expectations, while helping the company maintain organized, consistent, and effective outreach practices that contribute to strong audit preparation and successful outcomes. Our work has included public awareness outreach, crisis communications, stakeholder engagement, media relations, mailing support, event planning, and ongoing program management.

Communications Initiatives

Over the course of our partnership, MRG has supported a wide range of communications initiatives. This includes helping coordinate and support public awareness efforts such as PIPE programming and Paradigm presentation set-ups, which give Wolverine meaningful opportunities to engage emergency responders, public officials, and community stakeholders through direct, in-person communication. For the Detroit Metro Access Project, we helped lead a public information campaign that spanned multiple communities, included coordination with local governments, community open houses, and media relations at both the local and national level. We also arranged regular project restoration updates with MLive to help keep the public informed.

Public Information Campaign

In 2022, MRG developed and managed a public information campaign surrounding Wolverine’s hydrostatic testing of 200 miles of pipeline. That work included informing affected communities, hosting presentations for local public officials, and managing media inquiries throughout the process. Most recently, MRG led communications surrounding regulatory-required tree-clearing work in Lockport, Illinois, using a mix of mailings, direct phone calls, door-knocking, and meetings with local leadership.

Day-to-day Communications

In addition to project-based campaigns, MRG continues to support Wolverine’s day-to-day communications needs by preparing statements related to road closures and maintenance work, responding to media inquiries, managing public awareness mailings, and conducting outreach to stakeholder audiences including the affected public, excavators, emergency responders, schools, and public officials across two Illinois counties, four Indiana counties, and 21 Michigan counties. This ongoing work helps ensure Wolverine’s public awareness efforts remain active, well-documented, and relationship-driven across its service territory.

Compliance-Focused

By combining compliance-focused public awareness support with responsive communications and community engagement, MRG has helped Wolverine sustain programs that are both effective in the field and strong from an audit-preparation standpoint.

Communications Partner

This work has ranged from large-scale public information campaigns to day-to-day stakeholder communications, including PIPE and Paradigm-related engagement efforts, demonstrating the value of a strategic, long-term communications partner.

Our Work

Sample Geofencing Creative

"As one of the only Michigan based pipeline operators, it is crucial that Wolverine remains a good neighbor to our local community.

MRG, through the PIPE program, allows us as a company, to build and maintain relations with those who matter most in the event of an incident. Being able to meet face-to-face with Emergency Responders, Government Officials, and members of the community and talk to them not only about pipelines, but about who we are and what we do, is paramount and MRG makes that happen."
